A blog is a great format for daily writing - a perfect fit for having a student/small group update the message each day. This fits well with journal-style writing and adding a photo or two to illustrate the topic! Mrs. Goertzen's class blog
Wikis
In the spirit of total disclosure, I am biased towards wikis (In my district, my nickname is the "Wiki Princess"). They are so user-friendly that I make them for all kinds of topics. I use them for professional development, I use them as my class website, I use them for my blog, I use them for class projects... they are amazing for collaborative work, and it's so easy to upload and link things to a wiki! If you click on the link to tell wikispaces.com that your website is being used for education purposes, they even remove the ads for free (it takes about 24 hours for that change to be made). GoogleDocs presentation with ideas & tips for using wikis
A wiki is a great format for sharing things long-term - not so great for daily updating. I personally find that a wiki is a better fit for me in terms of uploading various types of files to "show off" our work/projects to families and to store project information long-term. Mrs. Goertzen's class wiki
Creating a wiki is also a perfect culmination of a project - this is my class Postcard Geography project last year! Postcard Geography
This wiki is student-created, with the entire class contributing their thoughts about a class novel. They wrote their response, recorded it as a Voki speaking avatar, and then uploaded their avatar speech onto the wiki. http://bgs4christmas.wikispaces.com/
